Chapman mouths expletive to Schmitt after shared error

San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman appeared to mouth "Catch the f---ing ball" to first baseman Casey Schmitt during a mound meeting after an errant throw allowed a run to score in a 7-1 loss to the San Diego Padres on April 1, 2026, at Petco Park. The Giants fell to 2-4 on the young season. Both players were charged with errors on the play in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Chapman fielded a chopper from Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts and fired an off-balance throw to Schmitt. The ball sailed high but catchable before glancing off Schmitt's glove and behind him, enabling a runner from third to score and extending San Diego's lead to 2-0. Earlier, in the third inning, Chapman threw out Fernando Tatis Jr. attempting to score from third on a grounder.

The Giants gathered on the mound to regroup after the miscue. Chapman had gone 0-for-4 at the plate, while Schmitt finished 0-for-3.

Postgame, Chapman and Schmitt exchanged words and described the exchange as heat-of-the-moment passion. "We're all brothers here. It's the heat of the moment," Chapman said. "I've already talked to Casey and it's all good." Schmitt added he was not mad and called Chapman "my guy," while taking responsibility for the dropped throw.
