The National Football League and the NFL Referees Association remain in talks over a new collective bargaining agreement, which is scheduled to expire on May 31, 2026.[1][2]

Pro Football Talk first reported that the league could resort to replacement referees if negotiations extend into the season and become contentious. ESPN cited internal emails indicating the NFL has started laying the groundwork for such a contingency ahead of the 2026 season.[3][4]

Replacement officials were last used during a labor dispute in 2012, when locked-out referees were sidelined for the first three weeks of the season. The period ended amid controversy over a "Monday Night Football" game on September 24, 2012, between the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks at CenturyLink Field in Seattle, where a last-second Hail Mary pass was ruled a touchdown for Seattle on a disputed simultaneous catch, known as the "Fail Mary."[5][6]

ESPN college football analyst Pat McAfee, a former Indianapolis Colts punter, reacted on X (formerly Twitter) to reports of potential replacements for 2026, stating, "Nope we can’t be doing replacement high school refs in the nfl again."

McAfee called for greater accountability among officials, integration of modern technology and a commitment to the game's integrity, while referencing his experiences during the 2012 lockout.[3]

The NFL has previously stated its focus on enhancing officiating through improved performance standards and accountability. The referees' association has reportedly opposed some proposed changes.[3]
