Schneider Ejected After Balk Clash in Jays' Loss to Dodgers
Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider was ejected in the fifth inning Tuesday after a heated face-to-face argument with umpire Dan Merzel over a balk call on pitcher Kevin Gausman. The dispute arose with Toronto trailing 2-0, as the call advanced Los Angeles Dodgers runner Hyeseong Kim from first to second base. The Dodgers went on to win 4-1 at Rogers Centre, dropping the Blue Jays to 4-7.
Schneider charged from the dugout with his face red, confronting Merzel directly for about 30 seconds before heading to the clubhouse. Alex Freeland followed with an RBI single that scored Kim after the ejection. The Blue Jays announced before the game that starter Cody Ponce likely will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL.
Toronto opened the season without catcher Alejandro Kirk, pitchers Jose Berrios and Trey Yesavage, and third baseman Addison Barger, among others. Outfielder Anthony Santandar moved to the 60-day injured list April 5 with a shoulder injury. The Dodgers had routed the Blue Jays 14-2 on Monday night.
The Blue Jays won the American League pennant last season before losing to the Dodgers in a seven-game 2025 World Series. Following Monday's loss, Schneider told reporters the team must test its depth and creativity amid early struggles in the 162-game season.
