DeChambeau Hits Patron, Trips in Bunker at Masters
Bryson DeChambeau struck a patron with his tee shot on the par-3 sixth hole and took triple bogey on the 11th after three swings from a greenside bunker during a 4-over 76 in the first round of the Masters on April 9, 2026, at Augusta National Golf Club.
On the 180-yard sixth, DeChambeau pulled his tee shot left into a patron's leg. The ball bounced toward the green and settled off it 24 yards out. DeChambeau covered his mouth upon impact, then gave the patron a signed ball and shook his hand before chipping to three feet and saving par.
The 32-year-old from Clovis, California, and LIV Golf player stayed even par through 10 holes. On the 11th, his approach from the fairway avoided the pond guarding the green but rolled into the bunker. His first sand shot advanced three yards, the second whiffed the ball, and the third reached 15 feet past the hole. He two-putted for triple bogey, reaching three over par.
DeChambeau three-putted the 16th for bogey, birdied the 17th from eight feet after an iron from rough, and bogeyed the 18th to close at 76. The score matched his opening 73 last year, when he rallied to tie for fifth.
He tees off Friday at 1:20 p.m. ET.
